Govt. publishes data of 2,986 Iranians lost in January unrest
TEHRAN — The administration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday released the detailed specifications of 2,986 citizens who lost their lives in the recent unrest.
The list, compiled by the Forensic Medicine and cross-referenced with the National Organization for Civil Registration, was published by the presidential office following a mandate from the President to “honor the sanctity of every Iranian life.”
“Our beloved Iran today stands in sympathy with the families mourning the heavy loss of their loved ones,” the official statement read.
“Every victim was a child of this land, and no bereaved soul should be left in silence or without a sanctuary.”
The administration emphasized that, unlike the nation’s historical adversaries, “who treat human lives as mere digits for political gain,” the Islamic Republic “views each individual as a world of connections and a vital part of the national fabric.”
The report reiterated that the total number of casualties stands at 3,117. The current list accounts for 2,986 individuals, with the discrepancy of 131 names attributed to “unidentified persons or national ID inconsistencies.”
A supplementary list will be issued as soon as these identities are verified, the statement read. To ensure no grievance goes unheard, a specialized platform will be launched within 48 hours to allow families to submit information or claims for verification, bypassing bureaucratic hurdles while maintaining the utmost privacy and dignity.
This transparency drive provides essential clarity following the events of late December 2025 and early January 2026, where legitimate economic grievances were hijacked by foreign-backed terrorist cells, according to Iranian officials.
According to Iran’s security bodies, these elements transitioned into a phase of “maximum violence” on January 8-9 (Dey 18-19), employing a “kill-and-blame” strategy designed by the U.S. and Israel to destabilize the country.
Of the total casualties, 2,427 have been recognized as martyrs, including both innocent civilians and security forces who fell victim to this orchestrated urban terrorism.
